According to the researchers, India's massive infrastructure deficit in the area of housing NSE -2.25 %, toilets and transportation prompted them to turn to 3D printing, which completely reimagined the construction industry.

Koshy Varghese, a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras, said that the institute is working with a number of government agencies and industry to disseminate knowledge and develop standards, policies and procedures for the introduction of new technologies into this area.

"We will also study natural materials in the future, such as stable soil, or alternative cementitious materials, such as ground polymers,"the team said.

The total printing time required to complete the prototype structure is about 2 days.

However, the team plans to print out the elements of a full house of about 320 square feet in three days and complete the entire assembly, including completion, in a week.
